Key Stats

Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff (16) hands the ball to running back Jahmyr Gibbs (26) against Seattle Seahawks during the first half at Ford Field in Detroit on Monday, Sept. 30, 2024.

Detroit Lions

The Detroit Lions are coming off an impressive win against the Dallas Cowboys 47-9. Jared Goff was excellent by completing 18 of 25 passes for 325 yards and three touchdowns. The backfield combo of Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery dominated, combining for 171 yards from scrimmage, 143 rushing yards, and two touchdowns. When the Lions are humming like this on offense, they are a deadly force in the NFL. There aren’t many defenses capable of slowing down this team. If the Lions can show glimpses of this game against future opponents, this could be a team destined for the NFC Championship game.

The Lions’ defense suffered a terrible loss despite the win. Star pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson suffered a fractured tibia that will require surgery, ending his season. He was having a defensive player of the year type of impact and season. On the year, Detroit’s defense ranks 8th in points allowed per game, 27th in passing yards allowed per game, 3rd in rushing yards allowed per game, 2nd in offensive touchdowns allowed, 7th in sacks, and 4th in takeaways per game. This defense will not be as good moving forward, but if they can manage timely stops, their offense is more than capable of backing them.

Minnesota Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings are coming off their bye week. However, the last time we saw this team in action, they defeated the New York Jets in London. Minnesota sit 5-0 on the season and first place in the NFC North. For the season, their offense ranks 6th in points per game, 19th in passing yards per game, 20th in rushing yards per game, 12th in offensive touchdowns, 15th in yards per play, and 4th in turnovers per game. Sam Darnold is playing some of the best ball of his career and will need to continue if the Vikings want to win this game.

Defensively, they have been excellent. Minnesota’s defense ranks 3rd in points allowed per game, 30th in passing yards allowed per game, 2nd in rushing yards allowed per game, 2nd in offensive touchdowns allowed, 2nd in sacks, and 2nd in takeaways per game. This team is going to have to keep up their dominant play to come away with a win in this game. Detroit leads the NFL in points per game, but Minnesota has allowed more than 17 points once, two weeks ago to the Green Bay Packers. The winner of this game takes first place in the division, they should be up to the task.

Prediction

The Detroit Lions are going to upset the Minnesota Vikings in this game and hand them their first loss. Despite the injury of Hutchinson, I believe their defense is up to the challenge. The Lion’s defense will limit the Vikings’ rushing attack with Aaron Jones questionable and Minnesota trading for Cam Akers. This game will be a shootout with the game having perfect conditions, being played in a dome. Jared Goff will outduel Sam Darnold and Detroit’s two-headed rushing attack will keep the Viking’s offense on the sideline.

Final Pick

Detroit Lions ML (+110)
