Key Stats
Carolina Panthers
The Carolina Panthers are coming off another disappointing season, finishing with the worst record in the league at 2-15. They were unable to use their first-round pick because they traded it to the Chicago Bears prior to the 2023 draft.
Bryce Young didn’t look like the player we know from Alabama, but he didn’t really get a chance to shine last year. This year, he is expected to take a step forward with an offensive line ranked 20th and a solid receiving corps to throw to. Young’s mobility will also help him evade defenders.
For more details on Bryce Young, check out my other article that goes into more detail about his potential.
The Carolina Panthers had one of the worst offenses in the league in recent memory. Let’s look at their stats:
- 32nd in the league in total yards per game
- 32nd in total passing yards per game
- 19th in total rushing yards per game
- 32nd in total points scored per game
New England Patriots
The New England Patriots are coming off their worst season since 1992, finishing 4-13. They now have a new head coach, Jarod Mayo, and drafted a new quarterback with the third overall pick, Drake Maye, who we should see in the upcoming preseason game. We will also get a look at two other solid QBs on the Patriots’ depth chart, Bailey Zappe and Joe Milton III.
The New England Patriots had one of the worst offenses in the league. Let’s take a look at those stats:
- 30th in total yards per game
- 28th in passing yards per game
- 26th in rushing yards per game
- Tied for 32nd with Carolina in points per game
Honestly, if the New England Patriots had even a decent offense, they would have won more games with their top 10 defense in total yards per game and rushing yards per game. They also had three consecutive games where they held their opponents to less than 10 points but lost all three because their offense couldn’t perform.
Prediction
This game is expected to be slow, with a light showing of offense from both sides. Bryce Young probably won’t start, and we will likely see Jack Plummer play a major role for Carolina. Drake Maye might play for a drive or a quarter, after which we will watch Joe Milton III and Bailey Zappe compete for the third quarterback spot
Final Picks
New England Patriots -3.5, Under 34.5
