Key Stats

New York Yankees

The New York Yankees are coming off a 5-4 11-inning loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday and are looking to get back to their winning ways. The lineup was 8-for-42 with three walks and 13 strikeouts. The team failed to hit a single home run for the first time this season as well. New York saw both Cody Bellinger and Jasson Dominguez steal a base as well to showcase their speed. The Bronx Bombers were just 3-for-12 with runners in scoring position and stranded 10 baserunners. Will Warren struggled as he pitched four innings and allowed four runs but did not factor into the decision.

The Yankees are going to have veteran left-hander Carlos Rodon on the mound and pitched well in his first two starts as he is 1-1 with a 3.97 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP in 11.1 innings. Hitters are struggling to hit against him as he has a .182 opposing batting average. Rodon faced the Tigers once last season in a losing effort as he pitched 3.1 innings and allowed four runs on seven hits with a walk and five strikeouts.

The Detroit Tigers have a solid team as they are coming off a 4-3 walk-off home win on Sunday against the Chicago White Sox. Detroit finished hitting 7-for-31 with eight walks and five strikeouts at the dish. Javier Baez and Spencer Torkelson each hit a double as the team’s only extra-base hits. The Tigers were 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position, and 10 Tigers were stranded on base. Jackson Jacobe allowed three runs (two earned) in five innings but did not factor into the decision.

Righty Casey Mize will be on the mound for the Tigers and is looking to pitch well as he is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA and a 0.71 WHIP in 5.2 innings. Mize’s command was solid as he has three walks to six strikeouts thus far. He faced the Yankees once last season and lost as he gave up five runs on nine hits with a walk and six strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work.

Prediction

The Yankees are the better team and with this game getting moved up to earlier in the day due to weather, the Yankees should be able to hit. There is a reason they lead the majors with 25 home runs and a .950 team OPS. With a big stadium like Comerica, Carlos Rodon should be able to limit homers against him. The Tigers have shown an ability to do well but they have been playing lesser competition. New York is red hot so go with them to win this game to open up the series.

Final Pick

New York Yankees -162
