The Chicago White Sox are coming off Major League Baseball’s worst record in the modern era. No one expects the team from the Southside to be playoff contenders in 2025 but is there still money to be made on the team? According to BetMGM the over/under for the Sox is set at 52.5. Although bettors may have to sweat things out, the over may be a strong play.
White Sox Win Total OVER 52.5 (-125)
Outlook Based Off Last Season
The 2024 season was absolutely horrendous for the Chicago White Sox and their fans basically right from the start. The team was already looking towards the 2025 season by the end of April. There is an old saying that you can’t win the World Series in April but you can definitely lose it by then. Going into May 1st, the White Sox had an MLB-worst record of 6-24. The team would continue to struggle all year with double-digit losing streaks at times. For those optimistic fans, Chicago did have a 10-15 record in September. It may not be much, but hey it’s a start!
They would end the season with the worst record in MLB modern era history with a 41-121 record. Luckily for the 1963 New York Mets who held the all-time record and the 2003 Detroit Tigers who previously held the American League record. This team is ready to put the past behind them and to start looking forward as they rebuild.
Offseason Moves
The biggest move for the White Sox was dealing their left-handed power pitcher Garrett Crochet to the Boston Red Sox in the offseason. The team’s decision to decline club options for veterans Yoan Moncada and Max Stassi proves that the front office is preparing for a rebuild and seeing what young talent they have. Their standout star Luis Roberts remains on the team and may be their main piece to build around. Roberts provides a combination of power and speed to the depleted lineup.
Chicago also brought in veteran outfielders Michael Taylor and Austin Slater on one-year deals. Two guys that they could move on from at the trade deadline when they aren’t in contention to build for the future. The Southside Sox also made some interesting minor league “prove it” deals with Joey Gallo and Brandon Drury amongst others. Again very low risk high-reward moves could be beneficial at the deadline.
Final Thoughts
So you may be reading this and think, Bobby you are out of your freaking mind! Why would you take over baseball’s worst team in the history of the sport? It’s simple. As hard as it is to win 100 games in the grueling marathon that is the MLB season, it’s just as hard losing 100 games. Young talent should get plenty of opportunities for this White Sox team. Even if you look back at that ’03 Tigers team and the ’63 Mets, both teams made improvements the following season. Detroit went from 43 wins to 72 the next season and New York went from 40 wins to 51.
You may have to sweat it out until the end but there is no reason why Chicago can’t win 53 games. Even with the bare minimum of wins to take the over, the Sox would still be losing 109 games. That is absolutely ridiculous to think about.
The Pick is In: White Sox OVER 52.5 Wins (-125)
