USA vs. France Preview, Prediction, and Odds, Olympic Games | August 10, 2024

USA vs France olympics

The USA will face the home team, France, in the Gold Medal Game in the 2024 Paris Olympics on Saturday after overcoming a 13-point deficit in the final quarter and winning 95-91. Team USA did not take the semifinal match seriously, thinking Serbia, a team full of NBA stars, was just a walkover.

On the other hand, France struggled in its group stage, where they were beaten by Germany and needed overtime to win against Japan. However, the French team defended well against Germany in the semifinal match, holding the Germans to 71 points, and winning the game, 84-71. The atmosphere in the arena will give the French team significant energy, in a difficult match against the reigning Olympic champions.

At some point in the game against Serbia, The United States was down 17 points and fought back to defeat Serbia in an all-time fashion, setting up a Gold Medal game against the home team, France. Serbia dominated the first three-quarters of the game, largely due to a struggling bench of the US Men’s basketball team.

Steph Curry erupted in the semifinal match, scoring 36 points, including nine threes. In the previous Olympic Games, Curry was only averaging 7.5 points per game, so he took the brunt of the scoring. The four-time NBA Champion also proved clutch in the fourth quarter, draining a layup and two free throws in the last minute of their hard-fought win. Even though the bench struggled, most of the starting stars for the USA came back strong in the second half.

France reached the finals by beating Germany, who were undefeated in the Paris Olympics entering that meeting.  The home team will struggle to beat the USA, as their offense always seems stuck in some quarters. In their semifinal match, France found it difficult to score more than 20 points in three-quarters of the game.

The reigning NBA Rookie of the Year, Victor Wembanyama, will need to do more for his team to pull off the massive upset and beat the USA. In the previous game, Wembanyama only scored 11 points, with the reigning NBA Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert scoring zero. These French basketball stars will need to contribute more to the Olympic gold medal match.

Prediction

The starting five scored a majority of the points, 80 points out of Team USA’s 95 points, in one of the most amazing comebacks in the Olympics’ history. Time again, Kevin Durant scored seven points of his 9 points from the bench when the team needed them. Even Joel Embiid played better in the match.

With a lackluster offense, France will not even come close to threatening the dominance of the United States men’s basketball. A major problem for the French is their inability to make three-pointers, converting only 25% of their 3s against Germany. In the game, they scored six three-points, which is lower than the number of three-pointers made by Steph Curry against a better team, Serbia.

Final Pick

O 176.5, -110
