The College Football Season is right around the corner. Media days around all the conferences have finally finished up. All eyes will be on the South Eastern Conference and who will make the SEC Championship Game.
There are lots of changes happening across the sport’s landscape. The Alabama Crimson Tide are the current SEC Champions, but their path to returning to the championship game will not be easy. They will be without former head coach Nick Saban, who retired after the Rose Bowl last season. Kalen DeBoer, who comes over from Washington, will take over. Also, Oklahoma and Texas are joining the conference, which was already pretty tough.
There are no longer divisions within the conference, as each team will play eight conference games. The two schools with the best record will attend the SEC Championship Game. However, the caveat this year is that the loser of the SEC Championship Game will not miss the College Football Playoff. See, the College Football Playoff is expanding, and there could be multiple teams from this conference in the playoff this season.
We at Total Apex Sports thought, what better time than now to look at the odds of the next SEC Champion?
Previously, we looked at the National Champion odds, and the Georgia Bulldogs are the favorites to win the whole thing at +300.
With the countdown to Week 0 of the College Football season approaching, let’s examine the odds of who will play in the SEC Championship Game in the 2024-25 season.
2024-25 SEC Championship Game Odds (via Covers)
Georgia Bulldogs
+190
Texas Longhorns
+320
Ole Miss
+650
Alabama Crimson Tide
+750
LSU Tigers
+1000
Tennessee Volunteers
+1600
Missouri Tigers
+1600
As we look at the odds, some things stand out. The Georgia Bulldogs are expected to return to the SEC Championship Game. Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs want to avenge their loss last year, which cost them a shot at a three-peat. Smart has stated that the SEC Championship is as important as the National Title. The Bulldogs are +190 to get there.
The newcomer Texas Longhorns are the other favorite to play in the game. They are listed at +320. Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns won the Big 12 last season but lost to Washington in the College Football Playoff. Texas is expected to succeed in their first season in the SEC. The conference schedule will be an eye-opener for the Longhorns. However, there are questions surrounding the other teams in the conference.
Ole Miss is ahead of Alabama at +650. If Lane Kiffin won the big game, he could have his team in the SEC Championship Game. There were so many missed chances last season, but he could not get his team to cross the finish line.
Alabama has to protect the quarterback and play better defense. Kalen DeBoer will have a high standard to live up to. At +750, the Crimson Tide has value, but it is a long road back to the title game in Atlanta.
The LSU Tigers are right behind them at +1000. The Tigers lost some talent to the NFL, so it will be an uphill climb in the SEC. They would need to worry about Bama and Ole Miss if they still had divisions, as the conference is so wide open. The other newcomer, Oklahoma, is at +3000. They are a real long shot to win the conference.
Again, 12 teams make the College Football Playoff this season. So, even if a team does not win in the SEC Championship Game or does not make the game, that does not mean their hope for a playoff spot is gone.
