Los Angeles Dodgers vs. San Diego Padres, Preview, Prediction and Odds | July 30, 2024

San Diego Padres

The San Diego Padres continue to chase their ongoing impossible dream of catching the Los Angeles Dodgers, who will make their way down the freeway for a three-game set. The Padres will come in hot this time, with Matt Waldron looking to keep things going, while Tyler Glasnow will take the hill for the Dodgers.

The matchup features two of baseball’s biggest spenders, and both teams have been active in the trade market trying to gird up for yet another stretch run. The Dodgers lead the NL West by 6.5 games, while the Padres have used a recent hot streak to vault into the second NL wild card slot.

San Diego is coming off a seven-game winning streak that was ended by the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday. LA, meanwhile, specializes in winning series, taking three recent sets against the San Francisco Giants and the Boston Red Sox, although they did drop two of three against Houston over the weekend. Let’s look at some other trends and see where the betting value lies.

Key Stats

San Diego Padres

The San Diego offense has been a juggernaut lately, averaging just over six runs a game during the Padres recent winning streak. But the pitching has kept up, too, with Dylan Cease posting a no-hitter against the Washington Nationals, and Cease’s epic no-no was one of three shutouts posted by the Pads during San Diego’s streak.

Offensively, the stars included Manny Machado, who slugged a three-run homer against his old team in Baltimore. Shortstop Xander Bogaerts has been hot as well, raising his average from the .240s to over .270 since coming off the DL after suffering a shoulder fracture.

The Dodgers have been winning on the fly while revamping their pitching staff prior to the trade deadline. They’re on the verge of getting all-around All-Star Mookie Betts back from a hand injury, but Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman and company have more than held their own in the interim.

The big news for Los Angeles is the trade deadline makeover as they try to plug some holes in their lineup and pitching staff.  They’re welcoming back Clayton Kershaw and Tyler Glasnow while shipping Jim Paxton to Boston, and they just played a vital role in a wild three-team deal with the St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago White Sox to acquire super-utility man Tommy Edman and reliever Michael Kopech.

Prediction

The big attraction here is the run line, which is unusually low at 7.5, partly because of the marquee matchup, but also because of the spacious confines of Petco Park. But both offenses have been clicking lately, and Tyler Glasnow is coming off a back injury so he probably won’t be going deep here. Matt Waldron has been known to post a shaky start, which means the Dodgers should be able to get into the San Diego bullpen. It’s a bit of a risk, but we’ll bet offense and go with the over.

Final Pick

Over 7.5 (-110)
