Through two weeks, they are the second-best rushing team in the NFL, averaging 197.5 rushing yards per game. They are not asking Justin Herbert to be Superman like the Chargers have asked him in the past. He has only thrown the ball 46 times total through the first two games. JK Dobbins has been sensational coming off a torn ACL. Last week he had 17 carries for 131 yards and a touchdown, his second consecutive game with 130+ rushing and a touchdown.
The Chargers defense has been one of the best defenses in the NFL. Although they have played the Raiders and the Panthers, below-average teams, they have been dominant. They ranked 1st in opponent points per game, tied for first in offensive touchdowns allowed, and 6th in opponent passing and rushing yards per game. Are the numbers inflated due to playing bad teams? The answer is yes, however, they are physical and have two good edge rushers in Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack. That is something not many teams in the NFL can say.

The Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Denver Broncos last week. The Steelers are still without Russell Wilson, but Justin Fields has been good in his absence. Fields is one of two quarterbacks in the NFL that hasn’t committed a turnover yet this season. Against the Broncos, the offense was great in the first half, and in the second half, they did enough to hold the lead. Najee Harris had a solid game on the ground with 17 carries for 69 yards. The Steelers’ offense is statistically one of the worst offenses in the NFL. They have only scored one touchdown this season, but they find ways to win ugly.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Pittsburgh Steelers are still excellent. They rank 2nd in points allowed per game, 4th in rushing yards allowed, 2nd in turnovers generated per game, and tied with the Chargers with only allowing one offensive touchdown. They held the Broncos scoreless through the first three-quarters last game. They are the best defense in the NFL when it comes to 3rd down % allowed at 19%. This is a team that is not afraid to play in a low-scoring, ugly game, just like the Chargers.
Prediction
I am picking the Pittsburgh Steelers to win and cover the spread in this game. This game is not going to be pretty. It is going to be low-scoring and played between the 40-yard lines. Although the Chargers have looked impressive, I am picking the better roster in their home opener. Pittsburgh has won ugly the past three seasons and they are already “battle tested” this season against the Falcons in week one. This is the first test for the Chargers where they play an average to an above-average team. It should be an early 2000s game when it comes to the run game and physicality. I can not wait!
