Key Stats
New Jersey Devils
The New Jersey Devils are looking to bounce back after losing Game 1 on the road 4-1 and are going to need some more players to step up. The offense scored one goal on 24 shot attempts and were 0-for-2 on the power play. However, the team was consistently in the offensive zone via winning the faceoff as they had 60.6% wins on the faceoff in the game. However, they fell behind early and the offense just looked completely overwhelmed as a result. Nico Hischier scored the team’s only goal and the offense needs to be more aggressive in Game 2.
Jacob Markstrom is back in the net for Game 2 after being the starter in the opening game of the series. He was one of the best goalies in the regular season at keeping the puck in front of him, finishing with a 26-16-6 record with a .900 save percentage and 2.50 goals per game allowed. If the New Jersey Devils can limit the amount of consistent pressure on the defense, they will be in a good spot to split the first two games.
Carolina Hurricanes
The Carolina Hurricanes were able to dominate in Game 1 and showcase exactly why they were able to go 31-9-1 at home during the regular season. The team scored four times on 45 shot attempts, including center Logan Stankoven score twice in the game and getting the top star of the game. The Hurricanes were 1-for-3 on power play opportunities and were able to take addvantage with more men on the ice as a result. They also kept the pressure on with scoring at least one goal in all three periods of Game 1.
Frederik Andersen is going to be back between the pipes in Game 2 of the series and allowed one goal on 24 shots in the opening game of the series. During the regular season, he put up almost the exact numbers as Markstrom in limited action, going 13-8-1 with 2.50 goals given up per game and a .899 save percentage. If the defense can continue to keep the puck out of their defensive zone, they will be able to cruise to a 2-0 series lead.
Prediction
The New Jersey Devils just are not in the same class as the Carolina Hurricans right now and including the regular season, all five games have been won by the home team and covered the puck line. With Luke Hughes ruled out for Game 2, that is going to be a massive blow for New Jersey and this Carolina offense was already putting a lot of pressure on Markstrom and the Devils’ defense. All in all, go with the Carolina Hurricanes to repeat how Game 1 played out and secure another convincing home win here.
Final Pick
Carolina Hurricanes -1.5 (+110)
