The Atlanta Braves broke a six-game losing streak with back-to-back wins against the New York Mets, and they’ll be looking to start a real winning streak when they head north to visit the Milwaukee Brewers in the first game of a three-game set that could definitely be a playoff preview.
Milwaukee, meanwhile, will be looking to rebound after an embarrassing series loss to the Miami Marlins. The Brewers managed to avoid a sweep yesterday, but concerns about Milwaukee’s offense continue to linger after the devastating injury to star outfielder Christian Yelich put a crimp in the club’s plans to cruise to the NL Central title.
The Brewers will ride starter Colin Rea as they take on Atlanta and their battered pitching staff. The Braves will counter with Grant Holmes after losing starter and All-Star Reynaldo Lopez to a forearm injury in their Sunday win over the Mets. Can Atlanta get a streak going, or will Milwaukee bounce back?

Key Stats
Atlanta Braves
Atlanta’s offense woke up on Sunday to pound out nine runs in their 9-2 victory over the Mets, and Spencer Schellenbach whiffed a career high 11 batters in a 4-0 shutout over New York the day before. The offensive explosion featured homers by Matt Olson, Austin Riley, Orlando Arcia and Ramon Laureano.
Hope they packed their hitting shoes for the trip to the Upper Midwest. Based on his recent stats, opener Grant Holmes isn’t going deep into the game against Milwaukee. The rookie reliever has given up five runs in his last six innings, so it will likely be up to the Atlanta bullpen to pick up the opener and keep the Braves in the game.
Milwaukee Brewers
The Brewers have ridden a strong bullpen and timely hitting to a six-game lead in the NL Central, and Colin Rea has been a big reason why. He’s been the staff anchor, and in this start Rea will celebrate a new contract extension that takes him through 2025.
Where Rea will get his support from, though, is another matter entirely. The power will have to come from Willy Adames and Rhys Hoskins, who have who have 33 homers between them (16 and 17, respectively). William Contreras, Brice Turang and Jackson Chourio have all been solid contributors, so in theory Milwaukee has enough pieces to overcome Yelich’s extended absence and the possible end of his season.
Prediction
Any time a top starter goes against a high-ERA reliever trying to hold the fort in an opener, the best bet is usually fairly obvious. That’s definitely the case with Rea, who has given up just two earned runs in his last 10-2/3 innings. Look for Milwaukee to wake up from its Marlin-induced slumber and notch a victory here and get the Brewers off on the right foot.
Final Pick
Milwaukee Brewers – Money Line -115
