The Kansas City Chiefs are hosting the Baltimore Ravens in a rematch of last year’s AFC Championship game. This is the first game of the NFL season as the Chiefs raise their third Super Bowl in the previous four seasons and the second consecutive. On the Ravens’ side, they want to get the sour taste of defeat out of their mouths from last season. Lamar Jackson is looking to have another outstanding season after winning the NFL Most Valuable Player Award last season. The Baltimore Ravens had a fantastic season last year. With a record of 13-4, they claimed the number-one seed in the AFC last year. Their superstar quarterback Lamar Jackson won the MVP award last season. What did they do this past offseason? They brought in future Hall of Fame running back Derrick Henry to boost their rushing attack. Baltimore’s run game was first in the NFL when it comes to rushing yards per game and second in rushing TDs. In the draft, they targeted secondary with rookie corners Nate Wiggins and T.J. Tampa, who are looking to add to a defense that was sensational last season.

Let’s look into their departures. The Ravens lost 15 players last offseason. The notable players they lost include Patrick Queen to the Steelers, Kevin Zeitler to the Lions, Geno Stone to the Bengals, and Morgan Moses to the Jets. That’s not all, they also lost their defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald, who took the Seattle Seahawks’ head coaching job. Although historically, the Ravens have always had an above-average defense, you can’t lose the interception leader last season in Stone, the best number-two inside linebacker in the NFL in Queen, and their defensive coordinator and expect it to be the same after being arguably the best defense in the NFL last year.

Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs are looking to be the first team in NFL history to win three straight superbowls. Last season was an up-and-down year on the offensive side of the football, however, this season could be a lot different. This past offseason they brought in a TON of speed, after drafting wide receiver Xavier Worthy in the first round of the draft, the fastest man in NFL Combine history, and Marquise Brown, has been a deep threat since entering the NFL, it looks like they are finally bringing in the speed they lost when they traded away Tyreek Hill.  We could see Patrick Mahomes turn back into the gunslinger we saw during his first three years as a starter.

When it comes to what they lost, the only notable player they lost was cornerback L’Jarius Sneed, who was arguably their best corner last year. After trading him to the Tennesee Titans, they will look to their young secondary led by first-team All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie. This is a very young group who took huge leaps from 2022 to 2023 and we can expect them to take another leap during this season. They were second in sacks last year, only trailing the Ravens, and this has a chance to be one of the best defenses in the NFL.  The Chiefs were second in scoring defense during the regular season and were even better in the playoffs.

Prediction

This being a “pick’em” according to the sportsbooks is insane to me. You’re giving me a team coming off back-to-back Super Bowls, an upset Patrick Mahomes after being ranked fourth in the NFL’s top 100 players, the better head coach, and they’re at home? I am picking the Kansas City Chiefs -3. This isn’t a hard decision. The Ravens will regress from their outstanding defense season last year. It is a no brainer for the Chiefs to cover the three-point spread.

Final Pick

Kansas City Chiefs -3 (-105)
