Key Stats

Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jacksonville Jaguars are searching for their first win of the season. Trevor Lawrence and the Jags are coming off losing to the Buffalo Bills 47-10. Through the first three games, Lawrence hasn’t lived up to the massive contract extension he received. He is only completing 52.8% of his passes and ranks 27th in passing yards per game with 186.7. If Jacksonville is going to turn their season around, it starts with him. As for their running game, the Jags are 16th in the NFL with 115.7 rushing yards per game. Travis Etienne had a solid game with 85 yards from scrimmage in their loss to the Bills.

As for their defense, they have struggled this season. Allowing 28.3 points per game and 252.3 passing yards per game, this unit can’t break themselves out of a wet paper bad. Jacksonville is the only team in the NFL to have yet to force a turnover. They are going to have their hands full against a pass-first Texans team that is loaded with weapons. If the Jags want to get their first win of the year this weekend, they need a clean game from Trevor Lawrence and to contain the big plays from CJ Stroud and the Texans.

Houston Texans

The Houston Texans are looking to stay first in the AFC South with a win this weekend. Houston is coming off getting trounced against the Minnesota Vikings 34-7. CJ Stroud had his second multi-interception game and completed 20 of his 31 passes. Stefon Diggs had his best game as a Texan, catching ten passes on 12 targets for 94 yards. This is a strong-nosed team and they were without their starting running back Joe Mixon against the Vikings. If they want to come out on top against the Jacksonville Jaguars this weekend, they must be efficient in their passing attack against one of the worst defenses in the NFL.

Their defense has been good this season. Despite giving up 34 points to the Vikings, Houston’s defense is 6th in opponent passing yards per game (163), 7th in rushing yards allowed per game (97.7), and 4th in sacks (13). The Texans have a top-tier pass rush for the first time since they had JJ Watt and Jadeveon Clowney back in 2016. I would not be surprised if they bounced back in a big-time way against a Jacksonville offense that has been subpar this season.

Prediction

The Houston Texans are going to cover the 7-point spread against the Jacksonville Jaguars in this game. The Jags are a team that is slowly spiraling down. Their defense doesn’t stop anyone or force turnovers and CJ Stroud’s strength is accuracy and limiting turnovers. Even if Joe Mixon misses this game, the Texans’ passing attack should feast against the Jaguars’ bottom-five secondary. Trevor Lawrence will be under duress just like in the Bills game and I expect it to get out of hand in a hurry.

Final Pick

Houston Texans -7 (-105)
