Houston Astros vs. Toronto Blue Jays Preview, Prediction, and Odds | April 2, 2024

American League contenders collide tonight in the Lone Star State. The Houston Astros (1-4) host the Toronto Blue Jays (2-3) in game two of a three game series.

The Astros are coming off a 10-0 victory over the Blue Jays yesterday. Ronel Blanco pitched the MLB’s first no-hitter of the season, striking out seven batters in the effort. Kyle Tucker went 2-3 with two HRs and four RBIs. Yainer Diaz also had two HRs.

Bowden Francis took the loss in his first career start. He threw 5.1 innings, allowing 10 hits and seven runs. George Springer was the only Jay to reach base, walking twice in the loss.

Can the Blue Jays bounce back and tie the series, or will the Astros secure the series win in Houston today?

Key Stats

The Astros are slated to send Framber Valdez to the mound tonight. In his first start of the season against the Yankees, Valdez went 4.2 innings, walked six and struck out five, while giving up five hits and three runs. Jeremy Pena and Yainer Diaz both have a .444 average. Kyle Tucker and Diaz lead the team with two HRs each, and Tucker has five RBIs on the young season.

Jose Berrios is scheduled to take the bump for Toronto. He is 1-0 after striking out six and allowing two runs in six innings against Tampa Bay. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Justin Turner lead the Jays with four hits a piece. George Springer has two HRs, while Turner and Alejandro Kirk lead the club with four RBIs each.

Game Prediction

The Houston Astros looked like they finally got on track last night after starting the season 0-4. The lineup drove in runs, which they had not done successfully in their sweep to the Yankees. Toronto on the other hand, has not done a lot of hitting so far this season. Framber Valdez is a dark horse betting favorite to win the American League Cy Young Award, so I wouldn’t expect the Blue Jays to start hitting tonight.

Final Pick

Houston Astros -1.5 (+130)
