Key Stats
Erika Andreeva
Erika Andreeva is 2 – 0 in Toronto after a pair of wins in qualifying, and now the Russian native fonds herself favored in Toronto against the defending champion of the event.
Andreeva already sent one Canaidan packing in this event from her first win in qualifying over wildcard entrant Carson Branstine, 7-6, 6-2. American Taylor Townsend was the second victim of Andreeva in qualifying and now the Russian native is favored to get past Stakusic with odds at -140. Depending on your book, I am seeing offers as high as -150 on the expectation on the win over Stakusic but I am turning to the handicap for my tip on this affair.
The -1.5 games spread at -115 makes the most sense because -140 and -150 types of bets don’t get us a return worth a damn!
Andreeva is 18-9 on hardcourts this season and the Russian is finally ranked inside the top-100 (88) and as it stands Erika is on pace to produce a winning record on all three surfaces in 2024.
Marina Stakusic
Marina Stakusic took the title in Toronto last year but the list of names in this year’s event far outweigh the participants this time around. Last season, the event inToronto was merely a WTA60 event so the path to the 2023 title wasn’t filled with big names.
Jana Fett was the last opponent against Stakusic in last year’s final, and the 113th-ranked Croatian was the highest ranked player that the Canadian faced in the entire event.
Now featured as the underdog in her native Canada, the step up in talent at this year’s event will present issues right out of the gate against Andreeva.
Prediction
Stakusic won last year’s event and is about to be sent home in the first round of the National Bank Open on Wednesday. There is no need to drink the juice and settle for the moneyline offer on the Russian to advance because the game count will be where we find the cash.
The -1.5 spread is priced fairly at -115, although the -2 is about even money if that sparks your interest. I am just not a fan of juice because I like my ROI%.
Adnreeva is 81-43 on hardcourts over the last four campaigns and has a 29 – 19 record this season.
Final Pick
The play is the -1.5 Handicap at -115 with the marginal juice attached to the action on Erika Andreeva to progress into the second round of the National Bank Open in Toronto.
