Los Angeles Dodgers vs. New York Yankees Preview World Series Game 4

Los Angeles Dodgers

The Dodgers are on the cusp of their second title in five seasons and first since 2020. Game 4 of the Fall Classic is tonight, and it is apparent that this year’s World Series is a mismatch. The Yankees lost this series when their bullpen blew game one. We have watched many championship series when the underdog has the opportunity to steal a game on the road and squander the opportunity. That team rarely recovers. Second, when Freddie Freeman homered in the top of the first of Game 3, the air went out of Yankee Stadium. Right now, the Yankees’ sole focus is to try and win one game and avoid the embarrassment of being swept.

Key Stats

Los Angeles Dodgers

The Dodgers are hitting just .213 in the World Series, but they have been timely. Look no further than Freddie Freeman. Freeman has been the difference in the World Series and can argue he single-handedly won two of the three games. In three games, Freeman is 4-12 with three runs scored, three home runs, and seven runs batted in. As discussed in yesterday’s column, the Dodgers are doing all this with Ohtani just 1-11 in the series.

With Buehler having pitched last night and Flaherty and Yamamoto not on full rest, it appears the Dodgers will be going with a bullpen game. They have done so four times this postseason, having faired well against the Padres in Game 5 of the NLDS but got knocked around by the Mets in the NLCS. Ryan Brasier was the opener in two games and Michael Kopech in another. Brasier, in eight postseason innings, has given up seven hits and posts a 4.50 ERA. Kopech, in nine postseason appearances, carries a 3.38 ERA across eight innings pitched.

New York Yankees

The Yankees World Series can be summed up by Aaron Judge’s continued post-season nightmare. Judge continued his slide last night, going 0-3 and bringing his total in the series to 1-12 with seven strikeouts. Giancarlo Stanton continued his torrid postseason with two more hits in game three, bringing him 4-13 in the series and overall hitting .298. New York is hitting just .186 with five extra-base hits in 116 plate appearances.

The Yankees will hand the ball over to Luis Gil to try and stave off elimination and force a game 5. Gil was a 15 game-winner for the Yankees this season. In his lone post-season start against the Guardians, Gil tossed four innings of three-hit baseball with three strikeouts and three walks. Gil was dominant at times earlier in the season and will have to be again for the Yankees to have any chance.

Prediction

The odds may adjust once the Dodgers announce their final starting pitching assignment, but the Yankees are still somehow favored, and we expect them to win. The public, and rightfully so, has backed off the Yankees in Game 4. Los Angeles is seeing 51% of the tickets but 82% of the money bets, and yet the Yankees have moved from -130 to -148. This makes us feel better about taking the Yankees in this game, and we will play on them. However, let us pivot and play on the New York bats against the Dodgers bullpen.

Final Pick: New York Team Total over 4.5 (-104)
