Key Stats
Cleveland Guardians
Tanner Bibee will be on the mound for the Cleveland Guardians this evening. He has been solid against the Tigers’ batters in his career, holding them to a .264 batting average, 24/91 overall with 25Ks. He has an 8-4 record. In his last start against Detroit, after the first inning in which he gave up a solo home run, he pitched four more innings, only giving up one hit, while collecting three of his four strikeouts. He was pulled after only 67 pitches, which is a season-low.
On the offensive side of the diamond, they are led by the dynamic duo of Jose Ramirez and Steven Kwan. The two stars lead Cleveland in batting average, home runs, RBIs, OBP, and hits. Kwan leads the entire league in batting average, and Ramirez is second in RBIs. In the last series, they were a solid 11/32 overall. The Guardians are tied for the second most wins in Major League Baseball and hold the top seed in the American League.
Detroit Tigers
Jack Flaherty is on the mound for the Detroit Tigers to start the series. In his career against the Guardians’ bats, he has been sensational, holding their batters to a .214 batting average, 27/126 overall, with 30 Ks. His last start against Cleveland was exceptional. He went six innings, only giving up three hits and one run that wasn’t earned and striking out six batters. He should be primed to keep his momentum going.
Offensively, the Tigers will be without their best player, Riley Greene. He is a big loss because he leads the team in EVERYTHING: batting average, home runs, RBIs, OBP, and hits. That is a massive loss. The Tigers have a losing record at home, 25-26, going against a team who has a winning record on the road, 30-27, putting up runs at home against a team who is in the mix to be the number one seed in the American League will be tough.
Prediction
I think this is a great spot for the Cleveland Guardians to defeat the Detroit Tigers. Although these teams are both 5-5 over the last ten games, the Guardians are flatly the better team in this matchup, especially without Riley Greene. With Detroit being without their best player, scoring runs could be a struggle against the best team, record-wise, in the American League, which still needs to stack up wins to keep pace with the Baltimore Orioles in the standings.
Final Pick
Cleveland Guardians ML -120
