The Detroit Tigers are coming off Game 1 of the ALDS where they were completely blanked 7-0 by the Cleveland Guardians. The lineup went just 4-of-29 with two walks and 13 strikeouts in the game. Zach McKinstry’s double was the team’s only extra-base hit and Detroit went hitless in five at-bats with runners in scoring position.

Tyler Holton was unable to record an out in the game before being pulled after giving up four runs on three hits with one walk and zero strikeouts. Reese Olson pitched the bulk with five innings to give the rest of the bullpen some rest.

Left-hander Tarik Skubal (0-0, 0.00 ERA) is going to be in the mound for the Detroit Tigers in this game and had an unbelievable 2024 season. While the award has not been given yet, he is projected to win the 2024 American League Cy Young Award after winning the AL Triple Crown. Skubal dominated in Game 1 of the AL Wild Card Round against the Houston Astros as he threw six shutout innings with four hits and one walk to six strikeouts in the victory.

Cleveland Guardians

The Cleveland Guardians started the ALDS with a flurry as they secured a 7-0 home win to take a 1-0 series lead. The lineup played well as they went 8-for-32 with five walks and eight strikeouts. Lane Thomas hit a home run in the first inning to set the tone for the game. On the bases, David Fry and Andres Giminez stole a base in the game as well. The order went 4-for-13 with runners in scoring position but also stranded seven men on base.

Tanner Bibee did not allow a run in 4.2 innings but the bullpen dominated as they combined to go 4.1 no-hit innings with one walk and seven strikeouts between the four relievers.

Veteran southpaw Matthew Boyd (2-2, 2.72 ERA in 2024) is going to be on the mound for the Cleveland Guardians. He only pitched 39.2 innings this season during eight starts, but was able to pitch well as hitters had a .213 batting average against. Boyd only has one appearance in the postseason throughout his career back in 2022 with the Seattle Mariners. He went 0.1 innings and gave up no runs on one hit with one walk and zero strikeouts in a no-decision.

Prediction

It is difficult to expect a sweep in the postseason and Game 2 is going to be the best chance the Detroit Tigers have of avoiding this. Tarik Skubal has been absolutely dominant when handed the ball and actually has shut down this Guardians lineup as he picked up a win back on July 22, where he threw seven innings and gave up just one run to this lineup. Matthew Boyd is susceptible to giving up a run or two in this game as the Tigers can put together hits and plate some men. While this won’t be a high-scoring game, go with the Detroit Tigers to win on the road to split the first two games of the ALDS.

Final Pick

Detroit Tigers ML (-130)
