The Detroit Lions are coming off losing at home against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 20-16. We saw Amon-Ra St. Brown have a great bounce-back performance from his week one dud. St. Brown had 11 receptions for 119 yards on 19 targets. Jared Goff could have played better, despite him throwing for 307 yards, he didn’t have a touchdown pass and threw two interceptions. He is in a great bounce-back spot against a defense that is middle of the pack against the pass and 17th in the NFL in terms of points allowed per game.
The Lions defense has been excellent against the run. They rank fourth in the NFL in rushing yards allowed per game. This is a physical defense led by Aidan Hutchinson who is coming off maybe the best game of his career. He had five sacks against the Bucs last week. As a team, Detroit is third in the NFL in sacks through the first two games. He’ll have his hands full trying to sack Kyler Murray who is one of the most dynamic mobile quarterbacks in the NFL.
Arizona Cardinals
The Arizona Cardinals are coming off destroying the Los Angeles Rams 41-10. Kyler Murray is third in the NFL in touchdown passes with four in the first two games. The Cardinals’ offense has been one of the best in the NFL thus far. They rank 2nd in points per game, 2nd in offensive touchdowns, fifth in yards per play, and 4th in rushing yards per game. James Conner is a big reason for it. He is ninth in the NFL in rushing and seventh in carries per game. He has been one of the most physical backs in the league since he was drafted in 2017.
Arizona’s defense has been solid through two games. Led by safety Budda Baker, they rank in the top ten in sacks (3rd) and rushing yards allowed per game (9th). Holding a Sean McVay offense to just 10 points, 2/11 on third down, 14 first downs, and 23:06 time of possession is very impressive. This weekend they hope to keep their stellar play moving against the Detroit Lions and Jared Goff.
Prediction
The Detroit Lions are going to win this game and cover the 3-point spread. After losing last week against the Bucs, I expect the Lions to bounce back and look like the team we saw in week one. Yes Kyler Murray is dynamic and the Cardinals’ offense will be tough to stop, they will have a regression to the mean in this game. I do not believe they will continue to keep up with their 34.5 points per game, which is second in the NFL. This will be a good game the Lions will control the time of possession and win.
