Key Stats
Detroit Lions
The Detroit Lions are coming off a tough loss against the Buffalo Bills 48-42. Despite the loss, Jared Goff was excellent. He completed 38 of 59 passes for 494 yards and 5 touchdowns. Amon-Ra St. Brown was also dominant in this game with 14 catches for 193 yards and a touchdown. Jahmyr Gibbs finished with 114 yards from scrimmage, 31 rushing, 83 receiving, and scored 2 touchdowns. Sam LaPorta had a good game as well with 7 catches for 111 yards. It was a costly game with multiple season injuries, including one to David Montgomery.
This defense has been one of the best all season long despite their recent play. They are ranked 7th in points allowed per game, 26th in passing yards allowed per game, 6th in rushing yards allowed per game, 6th in offensive touchdowns allowed, 24th in sacks, and 9th in takeaways per game. I mentioned injuries earlier, and they have a plethora. Brian Branch is questionable with a knee, while Carlton Davis III and Alim McNeill suffered injuries that landed them on the Injury Reserve list. At some point, you have suffered too many injuries and this Detroit Lions team has suffered too many.
Chicago Bears
The Chicago Bears are coming off a tough loss last week against the Minnesota Vikings on Monday, 30-12. Caleb Williams was decent in the loss. He completed 18 of 31 passes for 191 yards and a touchdown. Keenan Allen and DJ Moore combined for 14 catches, 128 yards, and a touchdown. D’Andre Swift was solid in the game, he rushed for 79 yards on 19 carries. This team was terrible on 3rd down. Chicago was 1-12 on 3rd down and when you are that bad, you put yourself a small margin of error. The Bears are ready for next season and have nothing to play for but pride.
Despite the bad season, the Bears’ defense has been solid. They’re ranked 11th in points allowed per game, 19th in passing yards allowed per game, 26th in rushing yards allowed per game, 9th in offensive touchdowns allowed, 17th in sacks, and 7th in takeaways per game. If you look at the injuries, they are one of the healthier teams in the NFL. Gervon Dexter Sr. is the only notable name on the injury report with a knee injury that sidelined him last week. As mentioned earlier, this is a young team that is ready for next season and adding pieces to a solid foundation.
Prediction
The Detroit Lions are going to win this game, but the Chicago Bears are going to cover the 6.5-point spread in this game. To put it simply, this is too many points to lay. When you consider the injuries, Caleb Williams will be able to move the ball and put up points on Detroit’s defense. We saw these teams play on Thanksgiving and Detroit won by 3, 23-20. This game is also in Chicago and we know how Jared Goff can play in the cold and not indoors. The speed of the Lions won’t travel with them to Chicago. The Lions escape narrowly with a win but the 6.5-point spread is too much to pass.
