The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are coming off an impressive win in their last game. With a 37-20 win over the Washington Commanders, Baker Mayfield looked as dangerous as he was last season. Mayfield completed 24 of 30 passes for 289 yards, and four touchdowns. Mike Evans was his usual productive self, catching five passes for 61 yards and two touchdowns. Although it was not a good day rushing for runningback Rachaad White, with 15 carries for 31 yards, he was exceptional in the passing game, catching six passes for 75 yards. Tampa’s offense showed that they have the firepower to be a dangerous team in the NFC.
To turn to the Bucs’ defense they held the Commanders in check. Only allowing 299 total yards, 161 passing, and 138 rushing, Tampa made key stops when they had to. Forcing the Commanders and rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels to be 2-of-8 on third down, including two punts, was one of the key reasons they won the game. Now it will be a different challenge this week against the Lions. They are going from allowing 88 rushing yards to Daniels, to facing a more pocket-passing quarterback in Jared Goff.
Detroit Lions
The Detroit Lions are coming off defeating the Los Angeles Rams in overtime on Sunday night football. With a 26-20 win, Detroit looked like the team they were last season, a well-oiled machine. Jared Goff was solid in this game, going 18-of-28 passing for 217 yards with one touchdown and one pick. This game was Jameson Williams‘ coming out party, catching five passes for 121 yards, including a 52-yard touchdown. This game was about what the Detroit Lions want to be, a physical team that is led by their power. David Montgomery had 17 carries for 91 yards, five rushes for 45 yards, and the game-winning touchdown in overtime.
Detroit’s defense had a long night, allowing 387 total yards, 83 rushing and 304 passing. Matthew Stafford looked like he was taking advantage of their worst unit, their defensive backfield. However, they forced timely stops, holding the Rams to just 2-of-5 in the red zone, including picking off Stafford at the end of the first half which took points off the board for the Rams. This is a defense that was suspect last season and looked to be improved this season. If the Detroit Lions want to go where they desire, it is going to have to be on their defense.
Prediction
I am taking the Tampa Bay Buccaneers +7 against the Detroit Lions. Although the Lions are a better team, a full touchdown is too much to swallow. Last year in the playoffs, the Lions won 31-23, Baker had the ball last and threw a pick to end the game. What is the weak unit of the Lions, their DBs, and the Buccaneers have one of the better wide receiver units in the league. Detroit is the better team, however, seven points is too much in this spot with how these two teams looked in week one. This game should be excellent and I can not wait for this one!
