Olga Danilovic and Anna Bondar will battle it out at the semifinals of the Hamburg Open on Friday, and the Serbian is favored to land in the final on Sunday. With odds sneaking past -200, Danilovic just knocked out top-seeded Mayar Sherif in the quarters to earn the spot in the semifinal and is now expected to play for the title.
Anna Bondar entered the Hamburg Open as the 4-seed in the top half of the bracket, and the Hungarian native has plowed her way into the semis without dropping a set. Bondar’s quarterfinal opponent on Thursday could not finish the match after a 6-0 first set as Eva Lys retired early.

Olga Danilovic
Olga Danilovic provided the only official upset in the quarterfinals after dropping top-seed Mayar Sherif out of the event on Thursday. Anna Bondar was also an underdog but got through after Lys excused herself from their quarterfinal affair.
Danilovic has gone the distance in her last two matches in Germany and don’t be misled by the 121 number sitting next to her name in the rankings. The 23-year-old Serbian native is 22 – 9 on clay this year and I will bet you that she would also stake her game on the dirt.
The only surface that Danilovic can claim a winning record on is the clay for eight straight campaigns, and I think she is also allergic to grass as is Bondar. (I’ll get into that when I get to Anna)
Danilovic went 6 – 0 at the French Open a few weeks ago before losing in the round of 8, and that is so stuck in my head in a good way. That is Major territory in Paris, and

I have to say that early in the week on another platform I called for the Hungarian to appear in the semifinals this weekend and here she is. Anna Bondar has taken advantage of a favorable draw in Germany and the 94th-ranked player on tour carries an 8-match win streak on clay into the semifinal of the Hamburg Open.
Bondar got a semi-pass to the semifinal because Eva Lys couldn’t finish the match after the first set. Anna smashed her way to six games to love win in the opening frame and Lys called it a day and retired leaving Bondar the easier path to the semis.
After sweeping the first set to love let’s go on a limb and assume that Bondar was on her way to the semi regardless of Lys dropping out.
Anna and Olga are playing each other for the third time in less than a month having split wins in July. On July 16 in Budapest Hungary, which happens to be about a two-hour drive to Bondar’s hometown of Szeghalom, Anna earned a straight-sets win.
The pair met eight days later at the Iasi Open where Danilovic leveled the series with the win and Anna is chasing a fourth title on clay this season with a tourney win at the Hamburg Open.
For those unaware, if Anna Bondar could play the entire season on clay, she would! I think the Hungarian is allergic to grass because she is 0-6 on that surface in her career.
Prediction
The fact that this is the third meeting in less than a month points me to a classic three-set battle for the rubber match. These two take so much pride in their game on clay, and an appearance in a final is a win away for someone.
