The Dallas Mavericks (45-30) are hosting the Atlanta Hawks (36-40) tonight in Dallas.
The Mavericks are coming off a loss to the Golden State Warriors which ended their 7-game win streak. This win streak propelled the Mavs to 5th in the west, but the west is very competitive, so that could change at any time. Dallas is one of 6 teams with 45 or 44 wins in the west, so just one loss could be brutal.
Atlanta needs this win in their own right, as they hang on to the 10 seed and the last spot in the play-in tournament in the east. With their star point guard Trae Young still out, it is going to be a tough matchup with Dallas tonight. Even then, this game is still full of star power with Dejounte Murray, Luka Doncic, and Kyrie Irving on the court.
Can the Mavericks get back in the win column tonight, or will the Hawks pull off the upset?

Key Stats
Dallas Mavericks
The Dallas Mavericks have been an offensive juggernaut all year, and it makes sense. When you have two guys in Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving giving you a combined 59.3 points per game, offense comes naturally. Obviously, this team is centered around Doncic. In the Mavericks’ last game, Luka had yet another 30-point triple-double vs the Golden State Warriors.
Atlanta Hawks
With Trae Young still injured, a few other players have stepped up for the Hawks. Of course, the main guy is Dejounte Murray. He is the obvious next choice to be the main scorer. Even though Murray has been amazing, I think the player the Hawks need to focus on in the future is Jalen Johnson. He just had the best game of his career vs the Detroit Pistons, with a 28-point triple-double.
For Atlanta to win this game, they will need another gem from Jalen Johnson. He needs to attack the Mavericks’ weakness, which is size. Atlanta’s main liability is defense. They play at one of the fastest paces in the NBA, and thus, they allow the fourth most points per game. This could be a problem for them because Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving are going to have a field day. The Hawks need to score well to keep up with Dallas.
Game Prediction
The spread for this game is rather large, and for good reason. The Mavericks’ newfound defense has been a big problem for opponents. Even though the Mavs lost to the Golden State Warriors, they only allowed 104 points. This gives me a lot of hope that they can easily bounce back from this. After a loss, Dallas is 18-11 against the spread. On the road, Atlanta is 13-23 against the spread. Generally, I love to fade teams who are playing the second night of a back-to-back.
Final Pick
Dallas Mavericks -12 (-110)
