Valencia took the lead against Barcelona in their LaLiga opener last weekend, with last season’s leading goalscorer Hugo Duro heading a cross from Diego Lopez into the back of the net in the 44th minute.However, the visitors managed to turn the game around, with Robert Lewandowski leveling the scores shortly before the interval, before the experienced striker netted his second early in the second period.
Valencia can certainly take positives from their performance, but they again look short of being a challenger for the top four, with their last Champions League finish in LaLiga coming back in 2019, and the six-time Spanish champions have finished 16th and ninth in their last two campaigns.Ruben Baraja’s side lost 10 of their 19 away league matches last season, so there is obvious room for improvement in that area, and it will be interesting to see whether any more new players arrive before the transfer window closes.
Los Che have brought in Dani Gomez, Stole Dimitrievski and Rafa Mir during the current market, but there could be funds available for further incomings, as Liverpool are thought to be closing in a deal for Giorgi Mamardashvili, who could remain on loan at Mestalla for the rest of the season.
