Key Stats
St. Louis Cardinals
The St. Louis Cardinals have been able to completely wipe away their early-season struggles and are back in the mix in the NL Central. However, the team is struggling on the road with a 16-19 record away from Busch Stadium thus far. Their offense has been turning a corner and really helping the team take that next step and second baseman Nolan Gorman has been leading the way with a .950 OPS and 10 homers in his previous 23 games.
On the mound for the Cards will be Kyle Gibson, who has pitched relatively well throughout the season. His last start saw him not factor into the decision against the Colorado Rockies. In that game, he threw six innings and allowed three runs on eight hits with a pair of walks and seven strikeouts.
Chicago Cubs
The Chicago Cubs have been struggling a bit as the team is three games under .500 entering this series and have lost five of their seven games of their road trip. This lineup has done an excellent job of making the opposing pitcher work as they are fifth in the sport with 239 total walks. Shortstop Dansby Swanson has been on a tear lately as he is posting a .333/.391/.619 slash line in his last six games played.
Rookie left-hander Jordan Wicks is going to be getting the start in this game and this will actually be his first time facing the Cardinals in his young career. Wicks came out of the bullpen in his most recent game and pitched 3.1 innings while giving up one run on three hits with one walk and two strikeouts in a no-decision against the Cincinnati Reds.
Prediction
The St. Louis Cardinals have been playing a more consistent brand of baseball lately and should take advantage of the Chicago Cubs. Kyle Gibson is pitching to a 3.19 ERA and a .188 batting average against in his six road starts this season and should limit the offense for the Cubs. Even when the starters are long out of this game, the bullpens are a significant difference as well. St. Louis is 13th with a 3.69 bullpen ERA on the year while Chicago is 25th with a 4.50 reliever ERA. Take the veteran leadership on the mound here to secure a road win to begin this three-game set.
Final Pick
St. Louis Cardinals ML (-105)
