Last preseason, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had a record of 2-1. Last season, Baker Mayfield was playing multiple drives in the preseason due to the QB competition the team was having. With the job being Baker’s for the foreseeable future, there is a chance he will not play except for a series or two, then they will turn to Kyle Trask. They also had a strong draft class buffing up their offense with playmakers such as Jalen McMillian (WR) out of Washington and Bucky Irving (RB) out of Oregon.
To highlight Trask, this preseason might be his last shot to to keep the backup QB spot. Last offseason, the Bucs brought in John Wolford, and with Trask’s deal up at the end of the season, he needs to show that he has the talent of a backup quarterback if he leaves Tampa Bay next offseason.
Cincinnati Bengals
The Cincinnati Bengals‘ franchise quarterback, Joe Burrow, suffered torn ligaments in week 11 last season. Bengals’ head coach, Zach Taylor, said that their starters could play in this game. Even if they play, it wouldn’t be for maybe a drive or two. Cincy is looking to squeeze every ounce of juice out of this season, with this season maybe being the last with their big three, Burrow, Chase, and Higgins. In the draft, they invested in the line of scrimmage, selecting Amarius Mims (OT) and Kris Jenkins (DT).
Prediction
Even though the Bengals will be playing their starters, as I mentioned above, they will not be out there for very long. The key to the Bengals’ success is Joe Burrow’s health, which means, that Cincy won’t risk his health for a meaningless preseason game. I can see the starters getting pulled relatively early. As for the Bucs side of the game, Kyle Trask has shown some success in the preseason, averaging just under 170 passing yards per game with a 2-1 TD-INT ratio.
