A weekend series will get underway in Atlanta tonight. The Pittsburgh Pirates are in town nearly a month after taking two of three from the Atlanta Braves in PNC Park. This time, the Braves get to play host.
The visitors have young, electrifying arms, but veteran Southpaw Martin Perez (1-3; 4.71 ERA) will return for the Pirates on Friday. His Atlanta counterpart is also experienced, two-time champion Charlie Morton (4-4; 4.20 ERA). Who will lead their team to victory?

- Martin Perez’s last start came in May against the Braves. He left with an injury after getting nine outs and allowing one run
- Pirates relievers are 28th in ERA
- Pittsburgh’s lineup is among MLB’s bottom five in batting average, OBP, and slugging percentage
- The Pirates are fourth in stolen-base percentage this season
- In six straight road games, the Buccos have scored at least four runs. They’ve totaled 37 (6.17 per game) in that stretch
Prediction
Atlanta’s offense may not be the dominant group of 2023, but they’re still scary. Especially at home (.753 team OPS) and against left-handed pitchers (.745 team OPS). Unfortunately for Perez, he may be walking into a trap in his return to an MLB mound.
The Braves should score enough runs to win this game comfortably. Morton has given up one total run in his last two home starts while Atlanta’s bullpen can shut down most offenses. Especially a Pittsburgh lineup that’s 22nd in runs per game. Atlanta won’t leave any doubt about this outcome.
Final Pick
Atlanta Braves -1.5 (+105)
