The Boston Red Sox posted a football score in the opener of their three-game set against the Seattle Mariners, winning 14-7, and they’ll be looking to clinch the series tonight in game two. Seattle continues to struggle offensively–despite the seven-run total, they were down 14-3 going into the 8th inning.
Boston will send James Paxton to the mound against Luis Castillo. Paxton is no stranger to the setting, his new team or the opponent. He started the season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, but Paxton spent all of last year with the Red Sox, and he put up most of his best numbers during his first six seasons with the Mariners.
Seattle has been up and down in their ongoing battle with the Houston Astros for the AL West lead. They got swept by the Los Angeles Angels, then swept the ChicagoWhite Sox, so they’ll need to show more consistency if they want to beat out the Houston Astros or make it as a wild card entry.

Key Stats
Seattle Mariners
The Mariners have the worst all-time record of any Red Sox opponent at Fenway, and they scuffle when it comes to generating offense and scoring runs. They scored exactly three runs in three games when they got swept out by the Angels, and only a series against the lowly White Sox allowed them to generate some decent numbers.
So what’s the solution? His name is Luis Castillo. He’s been lights out in his last five starts, allowing a total of seven runs. Three of those starts have been losses due to the anemic Seattle offense, though, and the Red Sox have been pounding out runs lately, so he’ll have a serious challenge on his hands.
Boston Red Sox
Lately, the Red Sox have been a tale of two teams. Their pitching has been awful, especially the Bosox bullpen, but they finally seem to have mastered the art of hitting at home, scoring a total of 17 runs in their weekend series against the Yankees before putting up two touchdowns against the Mariners last night. Everyone’s hot right now for Boston, with Dominic Smith, Romy Gonzalez and Masataka Yoshida each hitting homers last night, while Jarren Duran and Cedanne Rafaela continue to provide deadly speed on the basepaths.
James Paxton will try to give the beleaguered Red Sox bullpen a rest tonight, but this seems unlikely even though his 8-2 record is gaudy. The reason the Sox dealt him last year was because he struggled to make it through the lineup a second time, and the Dodgers dealt him this year because they had better pitchers coming off the Injured List. If the Mariners can get to Paxton early, they’ll have an early edge.
Prediction
Lots of contradictory trends here for two teams that have been erratic, to say the least. Boston was ghastly coming out of the break, losing six out of seven and dropping out the third AL wild card slot. Seattle has been equally strange. When in doubt, go with the pitching matchup–we’ll take Castillo to hold down the Red Sox while Seattle gets into the Boston pen early with a money line of -115.
Final Pick
Seattle Mariners – Money Line – -115
