Bianca Andreescu is one of two Canadians (Leylah Fernandez) competing in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France. Andreescu has been limited to only 16 matches on the WTA Tour this campaign, and her season didn’t start until June here in Paris at the French Open. The former World’s No. 5 (2019) earned wins in two of her three bouts at the Major Tournament in Paris and that is all the clay experience Bianca Andreescu can claim in 2024.
The dirt has never been a strong surface for Andreescu’s game but as long as the back can hold up she always has a fighter’s chance to pull off a surprise. At +105 on the Moneyline, the line setters aren’t exactly saying Andreescu has no chance of finding a win in Paris.
Let’s hope Coco made the trip to Paris because having her dog in the box seems to bring some inspiration. Hey, whatever it takes, right? I will give Bianca the respect of earning a set win to force this match into a three-set battle with Tauson. The heavy serve and ability to slice and come to the net will help her game on the dirt.
Clara Tauson
Clara Tauson has one ITF-level tournament title on clay in her career, but this is not a WTA15 event in Portugal anymore, Toto. This is the Summer Olympics in Paris and the level of opponents at this event is among the best for each Nation. Tauson is 9 – 4 on clay this campaign and the first event on the dirt this year saw the Dane make a run to a finals appearance in Portugal. After winning the Oeiras Challenger in 2020, Tauson came within a win of title No. 2 on clay. (Someone seems to like Portugal, can you blame her?)
After a questionable effort at the Madrid Open, retiring early in the first round, Tauson earned three wins in Rome on clay and three more wins at the French Open. Many question the Dane’s fitness and ability to stay in matches when she gets down, so we’ll see if that comes into play in Paris.
