Arantxa Rus was drawn in the 3-seed at the Hamburg Open after winning this title in Germany a year ago. Rus hasn’t dropped a set in three wins, although the Dutch native was pushed to 3-sets twice in her run to the title last season. Now that Mayar Sherif and Tamara Korpatsch have been bounced from the Hamburg Open, Rus is the favorite to win this match and is the chalk to win the title, so the rest is up to her to go and get it.
Ironically, Rus has won 10 clay titles in her pro career, but nine of the ten wins have come at ITF events. The Hamburg title is the only claim to a WTA-level tourney win, and Ruse has only won a single event in her career… here at Hamburg in 2021. Rus is 15 – 10 on clay this season and recently lifted The Hague title in her native Netherlands in mid-July. Arantxa won the only meeting between them, which was held at a WTA60-level event in 2020. Rus lost the first set and then plowed over Ruse, 6-1, 6-1 in the final two frames to pick up the Round of 16 win at the Andrezieux Boutheon in France.
Gabriela Ruse
Gabriela Ruse has the experience of walking away from this tournament with hardware and it has inspired a run back to the semifinals in 2024. Ruse won the 2021 Hanburg Open and it is the only career title she has claimed. At +150, Ruse may not be expected to hang around with the defending champ today but let’s not act like this will be a walk in the park for Arantxa Rus.
Ruse is 17 – 7 on clay this season, but she is ranked 142nd in the world, which is 41 spots behind 101st-ranked Rus, but that really isn’t much of a difference. They’re both ranked outside of the top 100, so that will not be a factor for this match. Tamara Korpatsch is ranked 109th in the world, and Ruse disposed of her in the quarters in three sets on Thursday. Ruse looked great out of the gate with a convincing first-set win, 6 – 1, but the wheels fell off a bit, getting forced into the third frame.
Prediction
The Dutch native is plowing her way into the finals to defend the 2023 trophy. No disrespect to Ruse, but the record on clay is against opponents that Rus would eat for lunch, and I see this as a cruise to the finals for Arantxa. Rus’ heads-up win from 2020 has about as much impact as the rankings, and that isn’t much!
