Mainz and Union Berlin are near the bottom of the table. This makes today’s match a very crucial game with a lot on the line. Securing a victory today ensures that you are that much better positioned to play in the top flight of German soccer next year. If you’re near the bottom, points are hard to come by for you. Therefore, both teams will be focused on pulling off a much-needed victory today as there will not be too many better opportunities for points. Both teams know this, and both sides will equally look for a positive result from today.

Key Stats
Mainz
Goals Scored: 14
Goals Conceded: 31

Saves: 53
Clean Sheets: 3
Unfortunately for Mainz, this is a team that struggles at home. Therefore the home field advantage isn’t likely to play a factor. They have only scored 6 goals in MEWA arena which is of course the lowest total in the Bundesliga. However, they face an uphill climb today. Especially because their last outing against Union Berlin saw them defeated 4-1. However, the brace scorer for Union, Milos Pantovis has since left the club for KAS Eupen in Belgium. This will help the home team. As of now, they are on a two-game losing streak. While a draw would be nice, in reality, they need the full three points from a win today.
Still thinking about this double nutmeg back-heel goal from Bayer Leverkusen’s Nadiem Amiri 🤯pic.twitter.com/CPe88LNpEp

Unfortunately for Mainz, they will be without their crucial midfield player Lee-Jae Sung. He is currently on international duty for his home country of South Korea. Additionally, Brajan Gruda and and Nelson Welper will not be options, as they are dealing with injuries. However, Nadiem Amiri is set to reinforce the squad. He recently joined from Bayer Leverkusen and is expected to start again in midfield or a different attacking role.
Union Berlin
Goals Scored: 18
Goals Conceded: 34
Shots On Goal: 71
Saves: 62
Clean Sheets: 3
Union Berlin is coming in with an overall better feeling throughout their club than Mainz. Despite having recently let go of their manager, things are looking for their new boss. Additionally, in the last six games, Union Berlin has gained points in four of them. Including a narrow one-nill defeat to Bayern, they have looked significantly better than the home side. However, even though they have been slightly better going forward, they also create plenty of chances for their opponents.
Brenden Aaronson goal in Union Berlin friendly. Hopefully some momentum for USMNT winger heading into 2nd half of season. 🇺🇸🙌pic.twitter.com/HywypMhRo6

Unfortunately, Union Berlin is in a tough position. Although they are the better overall side, they will be without their captain Christopher Trimmer, who picked up a red card in their last match. Brenden Aaronson has some quality to him, but the loss of their skipper will be hard to overcome. Additionally, Yorbe Vertessen and Benedict Hollerbach have been struggling as of late. Kevin Volland replacing one of the two is an attempt to give the side a boost.
Game Prediction
Regardless of how you view how the teams got here, this game should be treated like a championship. in terms of importance and what’s at stake, this will be one of the bigger games for both clubs. However, Union Berlin being without their leader will be nearly impossible to overcome. Additionally, against teams that are closer to their level, Mainz tends to play them close. Considering how there will be more gaps to take advantage of today and extra chances, I like them to take the win today. However, the game could go either way in terms of the over/under. Though I am leaving toward the over, due to increased opportunities today, the lack of finishing is too concerning.
Final Pick
Mainz Moneyline
