Key Stats
New York Giants
The New York Giants are coming off an overtime loss to the Carolina Panthers last week, 20-17. Daniel Jones played his last game for New York in this game. They released him Friday afternoon and Tommy DeVito will get the start over Drew Lock this week. Star rookie receiver, Malik Nabers, missed practice on Friday with a groin injury. He is still on pace to start, but just something to take notice of. Tyrone Tracy Jr. has been excellent this season. Last week, he had 18 carries for 103 rushing yards, including a 32-yard touchdown.
The Giants’ defense has been above average this season. They rank 16th in points allowed per game, 4th in passing yards per game, 29th in rushing yards allowed per game, 11th in offensive touchdowns allowed per game, 1st in sacks, and 26th in takeaways per game. Defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence II leads the team with nine sacks which is 3rd in the NFL. Despite their offense not playing well, this defense has kept them in the majority of their losses. Their pass rush can wreck this game, if they can get after Baker in this game, they will be in a good spot to pull off the upset.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are coming off a tough loss last game against the San Francisco 49ers, 23-20. Baker Mayfield was decent in the loss, completing 18 of 29 for 116 passing yards and one touchdown. Runningbacks Bucky Irving and Rachaad White combined for 157 yards from scrimmage and 2 touchdowns.
Tight end Cade Otton, who has picked it up in the absence of Mike Evans and Chris Godwin as of late, caught 5 passes for 35 yards. Speaking of Evans, he is listed as probable after missing the last three games with a hamstring injury. If he returns, that is a big-time weapon for Mayfield and this offense.
Defensively, Tampa has been one of the worst all season. They rank 27th in points allowed per game, 30th in passing yards allowed per game, 16th in rushing yards allowed per game, 24th in offensive touchdowns allowed, 9th in sacks, and 14th in takeaways per game. Defensive tackle Vita Vea leads the team with 5 sacks on the season. Cornerbacks Tykee Smith, Zyon McCollum, and Jamel Dean are all questionable for this game. Those are three impactful DBs for a defense that is already underwhelming this season.
Prediction
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are going to cover the 5.5-point spread in this game against the New York Giants. Despite New York being number one in sacks, I don’t expect that defensive line to wreck this game. With Mike Evans returning, that gives Tampa a weapon or “decoy” on the field that could open up running lanes for their two-headed monster backfield. Tampa’s defense will get after Tommy DeVito in this game and force a few turnovers. The Buccaneers will break their losing streak and close the gap between them and the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC South.
