Key Stats
Cincinnati Bengals
The Cincinnati Bengals are eyeing their first win of the season against the Carolina Panthers. The Bengals are coming off losing at home to the Washington Commanders. This was Tee Higgins‘ first game of the season, he had been battling a hamstring injury. He was targeted six times and caught three passes for 39 yards. His co-star Ja’Marr Chase lit up the Commanders, catching six passes for 118 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Joe Burrow was good enough to win against Washington, completing 29 of 38 passes for 324 yards and three touchdowns.
Their defense has been dreadful through the first three games. Against the Commanders, Cincy could not stop Washington. Jayden Daniels and the Commanders did not have a drive that ended in a punt or a turnover. That is pitiful for an NFL defense. If the Bengals want to get back in the AFC North race, they need to put their best football ahead of them and string some wins together. They rank 26th in points allowed per game with 26.7 and 26th in rushing yards allowed per game with 142.3.
Carolina Panthers
The Carolina Panthers are coming off a win against the Las Vegas Raiders this past Sunday. After benching former number-one overall pick Bryce Young, Andy Dalton stepped up and dominated in his stead. Dalton completed 26 of 37 passes for 319 yards, three touchdowns. Chuba Hubbard had a masterclass as well with 169 yards from scrimmage and a receiving touchdown. Diontae Johnson showed why the Panthers traded from him, in this game, he caught eight passes on 14 targets for 122 yards and a touchdown. If Dalton can be a serviceable quarterback for this team, it could make things interesting in the NFC South.
This defense has been bad through the first three games. They are ranked 32nd in points allowed per game (31.7), 28th in rushing yards allowed per game (151.3), 29th in offensive touchdowns allowed (11), and 24th in sacks (5). This unit would regress after trading away pass rusher Brian Burns in the offseason and Derrick Brown getting hurt, but this is horrendous. If they can stop a nosebleed, this team could be a “good” bad team. Last week against the Raiders, they held them to 3/11 on third down, if they can do this again against the Bengals, Cincy could be on upset alert.
Prediction
Despite their 0-3 start, the Cincinnati Bengals are going to cover the 4.5-point spread in this game. The Panthers are a bad team and Andy Dalton will be without wide receiver Adam Thielen who was recently put on the Injury Reserve list. Although offensive tackle Trent Brown got injured in their loss against the Commanders, I expect the Bengals’ offense to start to gel and get their first win of the season. This pick isn’t rocket science. I am taking the better team, better quarterback, and slightly better defense in this game.
Final Pick
Cincinnati Bengals -4.5 (-110)
