The Texas Rangers will try to avoid a sweep against the Toronto Blue Jays in the final game of a three-game set. The Rangers came in at 51-52 with hopes of getting over .500 and keeping pace with division-leading Houston, but dropping the first two games has quashed that dream.
Instead, the Blue Jays offense has exploded, scoring 13 runs in the first two games despite the fact that Bo Bichette and Vlad Guerrero are rumored to be on the trade block. Firmly ensconced in the AL East cellar, Toronto is already in sell mode, having dealt reliever Nate Pearson and catcher Danny Jensen to the Cubs and Red Sox, respectively. If the Jays are looking to convince management to become buyers, it isn’t quite working.
The offense is clicking, though, which means Texas starter Jon Gray will have his hands full when he takes the hill. He’ll be opposed by Toronto veteran Jose Berrios, who’s coming off consecutive losses in which the Jays gave up 17 runs. Let’s see what the stats and trends say about who gets it done in the finale.

Key Stats
Texas Rangers
The first two losses to the Blue Jays ended a five-game losing streak in which the Rangers swept the hapless White Sox in a four-game set and bested the AL East-leading Orioles. During that stretch, Texas gave up a total of ten runs. In the last two games, though, they’ve given up eight, so pitching has been the difference. Jon Gray has been solid, though, giving up seven runs in his last four outings. In his last start he feasted on the White Sox’s weak lineup, giving up just one run in 7-2/3 to notch a 3-2 victory. Marcus Semien has been a recent offensive star, going 2 for 4 with a home run in Friday’s 6-5 loss.
Toronto Blue Jays
Vlad Guerrero Jr. is making a strong case to stay in Toronto after recently discussing the possibility of being traded to the (gasp!) Yankees. Daulton Varsho, George Springer and Ernie Clement have also been key offensive contributors, with Varsho delivering a homer on Saturday, while Clement came up with the game winning hit on Friday and Springer chipping in that same game. Torontos’s offense is tough to stop when they get going, though, especially at the Rogers Centre.
Jose Berrios has been a weak link on the mound lately, though, giving up a total of eight runs, and he failed to make it through the fifth inning in both games. The Blue Jays managed to save their bullpen in yesterday’s tilt, with Kevin Gausman going the distance and giving up just three runs, but Toronto will need Berrios to go at least five innings.
Prediction
This series has been unpredictable from the get-go, so we’ll go with the trend toward offense and pick the over on the money line of 8.5. Jon Gray will have trouble making it twice through the lineup against Toronto’s powerful lineup, and Berrios will likely struggle as well. Guerrero Jr., Springer and company will be looking to bash again, and the Rangers have the firepower to keep pace.
Final Pick
Texas Rangers – O 8.5 – Total (-110)
