Alexander Zverev vs. Alex De Minaur Preview, Predictions, and Odds | French Open June 5th, 2023

It’s a battle of the Alex’s and a showdown between two top 15 players in the 2024 French Open quarterfinal. Alexander Zverev has been on a tear lately, beating 14-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal in straight sets in the first round. Although Nadal was not at 100 percent, he is still not an easy out and Zverev played very well against him.

Alexander Zverev recently won the Italian Open, defeating Chilean player Nicolas Jarry 6-4, 7-5. The 4th ranked player from Germany is doing very well in 2024. He is one of the favorites along with Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner to win the French Open.

Alex De Minaur has also been having a solid 2024 season. He won a title at the Acapulco tournament in Mexico at the start of March. This win has an asterisk next to it because Jack Draper retired in the third set with an illness after winning the second set 6-2. De Minaur reached a career high rank of ninth on February 19th.

Key Stats

Alexander Zverev

Alexander Zverev has had a great 2024 season so far. He has gone 28-9 and has won one title. He also serves a ton of aces, serving 297 so far this season. Only Hubert Hurkacz has more aces this season with an astounding 430. Zverev also gets a high percentage of his first serves in at 74%. In addition to his great serving, Zverev is very tall at 6’6 and is able to hit higher balls, volley effectively, and reach up to smash overheads on lobs.

When Zverev doesn’t get his first serve in, he usually gets his second serve in, recording only 53 double faults this season. That’s less than two per match.  Alexander Zverev has his serve dialed in.

The German has had his way with De Minaur, holding a 7-2 lead over the Australian in his career.

Alex De Minaur has worse stats than Alexander Zverev in almost every stat listed above. That doesn’t bode well for him on paper in this match. His 70 double faults this season gives him an average of two double faults per match. While that isn’t horrible, it is worse than Zverev’s 1.4 double faults per match. In a match where your opponent is serving well, not matching that is tough to overcome.

Where De Minaur could have an edge against Zverev in this match is break points. The Australian has converted an impressive 43% of his break point chances this season. Zverev has converted 38% on the other hand. De Minaur could also show some quickness and the ability to get to more balls based on his shorter and lighter frame. Besides those factors, De Minaur is the underdog in this match against a hot Alexander Zverev.

Prediction

I am picking Alexander Zverev to win this match based on his much stronger serving ability. The serve, when done correctly, can be a game changer in a match. It can help you control and even dominate the match. Serving well opens up so many other parts of your game where you can be successful.

If Zverev serves a great out wide serve, he can take the next return and hit it the other direction and give De Minaur almost no chance to return that because he’ll be almost off the court on the other side.

Zverev also has more returning experience this season, returning 484 games to De Minaur’s 389. Coupled with Zverev’s greater experience in deep tournament matches, Zverev will take this match.

Final Pick

Zverev -250
