Birmingham Stallions
If there is one thing to be concerned about for the Stallions, it is that QB Matt Corral had a pedestrian day. He was 12-for-21 for 201 yards with one touchdown and an interception. It didn’t matter much as the two-headed rushing attack of CJ Marable and Ricky Person Jr controlled the game.
This is a very minor concern. The Stallions looked primed for another deep playoff run and possibly a third straight championship.
Michigan Panthers
Many, including myself, had the Panthers losing big in the opening game against the Battlehawks. How were they able to pull off the upset? Wes Hills had the best individual rushing performance of the week with 85 yards on 11 carries. The defense was also a huge part of the victory. In the first half, they held AJ McCarron and the offense to three points and four punts.
There are some concerning stats. QB EJ Perry threw two interceptions, and the team was only 2-9 on third down. There is plenty to work on, and they will enter another tough matchup in week two.
Game Prediction
Until the Birmingham Stallions show any signs of slowing down, I’m sticking with them. The Michigan Panther’s victory was one of the coolest moments of the opening weekend, but their victory was extremely flawed. If the Panthers are going to have any chance, their rush defense has to be dominant. I’ll believe it when I see it. I’m happy to be wrong about the Stallions.
