The Seattle Mariners, long known for their passionate fan base, have been on a journey to transform from a team of hearts into a team of might. The 2024 season could mark a turning point in this journey. The Mariners have been quietly assembling a deep and talented roster, a force that could surprise many fans and surpass their projected win total of 86.5.
Seattle Mariners Pitching Staff
One key factor that could propel the Seattle Mariners to success is their pitching staff. The Mariners’ rotation is deep and brimming with talent, spearheaded by ace right-hander Luis Castillo. He has firmly established himself as one of the league’s premier pitchers. The young duo of Logan Gilbert and George Kirby have also shown glimpses of their brilliance in their brief MLB careers. Bryce Miller and Brian Woo, from the fourth and fifth starter spots, respectively, add to the team’s potential.
But the Mariners’ bullpen is also a strength. Closer Andres Munoz takes over the ninth inning after accumulating 13 saves with a 2.97 ERA, 1.27 WHIP (walks + hits per innings pitched), and 67 strikeouts in just 49 innings, while Matt Brash, Gregory Santos, and Ryne Stanek provide quality depth.
Mariners Offense
Offensively, the Seattle Mariners have a promising core of young hitters. Outfielder Julio Rodriguez was a standout in his sophomore season, boasting a .275 batting average, 32 home runs, 37 doubles, 103 RBI, and 37 steals, along with a .818 OPS. He will be joined by fellow outfielder Mitch Haniger, who returns to the team after a brief stint with the Arizona D-backs. Catcher Cal Raleigh, who quietly hit 30 home runs in 2023, could significantly impact 2024.
However, the Mariners also have some proven veterans who can contribute. First baseman Ty France, acquired from the Padres in a trade in 2021, is a solid all-around hitter who can hit for both power and average. Second baseman Jorge Polanco is a switch hitter who will produce at 30 years of age. He hit 33 home runs in 152 games for the Twins in 2021. Last year, Polanco smashed 14 dingers in only 80 games. Hopefully, he can stay healthy all year!
Another reason why the Seattle Mariners could exceed their projected win total is their improved defense. In 2023, the Mariners ranked 16th in defensive runs saved. But with Julio Rodriguez covering a lot of ground in center field and Polanco, Ty France, Josh Rojas, and J.P. Crawford on the infield, Seattle should be much better defensively overall.
Seattle Mariners Manager
Also, adding to the potential success of the Seattle Mariners in 2024 is their manager. Scott Servais has won 88 or more games in three straight seasons. He is renowned for his strong communication skills and ability to bring out the best in his players. With a talented roster and a respected manager, the Mariners are well-positioned to exceed their projected win total in 2024.
Of course, factors could permanently derail a team’s season. Injuries, underperformance, and bad luck can ruin a team’s hopes. But if the Mariners can stay healthy and perform up to their potential, they could be a surprise contender in the American League. With their talented pitching staff, young core of hitters, and improved defense, the Seattle Mariners could be a team to watch in 2024.
