Purdue is a team that has championship aspirations. Moreover, they look to solidify their spot as one of the top teams in the nation. And while a loss would not be completely shocking or likely held against them too much because it’s Wisconsin, they need to play well and win in order to enter postseason play on a good note. Again, a loss against Wisconsin would likely be fine in the overall grand scheme of things simply due to name recognition, but that’s all. This is not a good Wisconsin team compared to the Purdue Boilermakers. But they not only have one of the best players in Zach Edey but Braden Smith has been criminally overlooked due to the popularity of his teammate.
Smith averages 7.1 assists per game and can be a consistent threat from deep. Meanwhile, Edey averages 24.1 points per game and 11.7 rebounds per game. Again, the advantage will be on the interior, but make no mistake: if the Wisconsin guards are forced to overhelp or get caught sleeping for even a second, the Purdue guards are more than capable of their own.
Game Prediction
The question in this game is: how long will the Purdue Boilermakers keep their starters in? Although Wisconsin has plenty of talent, they don’t run like most teams with a particularly deep bench. Furthermore, when it gets to that next level of play, it’s likely going to be tough. There are a couple of mismatches against the Badgers today. While upsets can happen, considering how bad Wisconsin’s side has been, it’s not likely.
The advantages are definitely in the frontcourt for Purdue; however, the Wisconsin guards can hold their own and could keep things interesting if they force enough turnovers. But overall, the playmaking of the Purdue guards should actually be plenty, and this is the intriguing matchup to look for. However, as Edey is a walking 20-point and 10-rebound person minimum, don’t be surprised if he pushes well past that for the Purdue Boilermakers today.
