Braves win 5-2: Riley and his teammates open up new horizons

Braves Atlanta Austin Riley

Things are finally moving for Austin Riley and his partners. Indeed, the Atlanta Braves continued their impressive streak with a decisive 5-2 over the Seattle Mariners in the second game of their two game series. Braves pitcher once again achieved a historic feat. Emerson Hancock struggled  to find his command, issuing a career-high four bases on balls in just 3.2 innings of work.

Commenting on Riley’s performance, Chris Sale said, “There’s no limit to how long you can do the right things without being rewarded.” This performance was made possible by Hancock’s control difficulties, which gave the Braves a one-run lead. In the third inning, Marcell Ozuna’s walk-off homer gave the Braves a 1-0 advantage. Then the Braves came back in the fourth, with a two-run triple from Riley and an RBI single from Matt Olson, to make it 5-0.

Even if the Braves pitchers were the steamroller of their incredible season debut, the offense really showed some convincing results in this game. Sure, Austin Riley and Ronald Acuña Jr. each enjoyed games with multiple hits, but Riley’s triple was the biggest blow. For his part, Ozzie Albies also contributed a single and a base on balls, continuing his goals for this year.

Acuña’s strikeout rate is rated at 27.9 percent after taking three consecutive strikes on Wednesday. The reigning NL MVP has struck out just 11.4 per cent of the time while hitting 41 home runs. He managed just one home run while collecting a .690 OPS this year. In addition, he was a key part of Wednesday’s victory with a number of singles, including one in front of Riley’s triple and Olson’s single in the fourth inning.

Acuña started Wednesday with a .245 batting average and an expected .253 (xBA). In addition, he had a .318 slugging percentage and an expected .372 slugging percentage (xSLG).

With the win, the Braves raise their record to 20-9 this season, maintaining Major League Baseball’s best record. Their dominant pitching and timely hitting have been the real secret to their success, and they’ll be looking to continue this grand sequence as they return home to take on the Philadelphia Phillies in a three-game series.

For the Mariners, it was a terrible defeat, as they had a chance to get back into the game late. Unfortunately, they were unable to capitalize in the allotted time. They’ll be looking to regroup and bounce back in their next series against the Oakland Athletics.

As the season progresses, fans can look forward to more exciting encounters and dramatic storylines. One of the pillars of this team, Marcell Ozuna has allowed the Braves to be rewarded for the patience they’ve maintained as he endured less-than-successful seasons marred by legal problems with one of the worst months in franchise history. So it’s a fresh start, a new breath to recharge the batteries and head for the crown.

To this end, Riley says with enthusiasm: “A lot of guys have come looking for us over the last month. It’s encouraging to finally find ourselves and to be able to do a really good round like this. If we can get going and the guys do their thing, I like where we’ll be.”
