2024 NL Cy Young Betting Odds: Analysis

While Blake Snell won the Cy Young last year, many other favorites were in the mix. Wheeler, Webb, and Burnes received votes for last year’s award and are among this year’s favorites. The pitching is strong in the National League. Four teams, the Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies, Milwaukee Brewers, and Los Angeles Dodgers, have two pitchers with decent odds in the offseason.

Sonny Gray is an interesting player in the 2024 NL Cy Young betting odds. He finished second in the AL race in 2023 when he was with the Minnesota Twins but is +3000 in the initial odds. The oddsmakers think Gray’s season last year was an anomaly, and he will regress to his career average with the Cardinals.

Favorite Value Bet: Tyler Glasnow

I find Glasnow interesting in the 2024 NL Cy Young betting odds. Glasnow came over in a trade from the Tampa Bay Rays. His stats last season were nothing spectacular. A 10-7 record, 3.53 ERA, and 1.08 WHIP are good but not great stats. However, the difference between the Rays and the Dodgers is night and day. Both of them are good teams, but the 2024 Dodgers are loaded. Shohei Ohtani will lead a daunting offense that should put up a lot of runs.

How does this help Glasnow’s Cy Young chances? He should be able to be more relaxed on the mound. It is easier to pitch when you have a lead. Even if Glasnow is pitching without a lead, his offense could explode at any time. He has the pitching repertoire to put up huge stats, and this could be a career year for him.

Favorite Long Shot Bet: Jesus Luzardo

Betting on Luzardo is making some assumptions. Until 2023, he didn’t have the workload to be in contention for the Cy Young award. In 2022, he pitched 100 1/3 innings but increased to 178 2/3 in 2023. He maintained the same production even with the increase in innings. His 3.58 ERA needs to come down, as well as his walks. He has the tools to make it all work but hasn’t until now.

What makes Luzardo an interesting bet is he doesn’t allow much contact. He had a decent 70.8% contact rate in 2023. Luzardo could be in the mix at the end of the season if he can keep the strikeouts high and the hard contact low.
