2024 AL Cy Young Betting Odds: Initial Thoughts
The favorites make sense. Cole was the unanimous winner last year and should be the clear favorite going into 2024. Gausman was third in last year’s voting, and at +650, his odds are interesting. You still get some value, but he should be in the race, barring his skills falling off a cliff. Valdez made a late run at the Cy Young last year and finished ninth in the voting. If he can build off of the second half of the 2023 season, he could be one of the favorites in September.
This has nothing to do with the 2024 AL Cy Young betting odds, but the Seattle Mariners have three pitchers at +2300 or lower to win the award. They could have an absolutely devastating rotation throughout the season. Their shortened rotation could be difficult if they can make it to the playoffs.
Favorite Value Bet: Tarik Skubal
Skubal has dealt with injuries in the last two years. He missed time in 2022 before missing the first half of 2023 with a left flexor tendon injury. When he does play, his numbers are Cy Young-worthy. In 80 1/3 innings pitched last season, he went 7-3 with a 2.80 ERA, 0.90 WHIP, and 32.9% strikeout. These are award-winning numbers. He has shown steady improvement over the course of the last two years. He has three elite pitches, a four-seamer, changeup, and slider, with a swinging-strike rate above 10%.
The tools are there. Health is difficult to predict. With any player in any sport for any award, health is what would prevent them from winning. Some players are injury-prone, and others are unlucky for a couple of years. If Skubal can make 30 starts next year, he will be in the thick of the race.
Favorite Long Shot: Cole Ragans
Ragans is a part of the logjam at +2700 in the 2024 AL Cy Young Betting Odds. If you are making bets on Ragans for 2024, you are banking on him duplicating the second half of 2023. He had a pitiful 5.92 ERA with the Texas Rangers before being traded to the Royals. Instead of keeping him in the bullpen, the Royals put him in the starting rotation. In 12 starts, he had a 2.64 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, and 31.1% strikeout rate.
It is extremely risky to make a bet off of half a season. His walk rate is a little concerning as well. However, if you are looking for a long-shot bet, Ragans is good. The Royals will need him in the starting lineup and will likely not cut his innings like they did at last year’s end. If he is able to come out of the gate strong, his odds will drop. Getting them at +2700 might be a bargain come September.
